Am I Getting Ripped Off on My Mac Pro Repair?

Well graphic cards are not cheap, but you will always get ripped by people taking a look at your computer, there's no way around that unless you fix it yourself or having a friend do it

1. Mac pro early 2008 won´t boot from pendrive with yosemite install app

Here's something to try...If your Mac Pro has issues with booting from USB but will boot from a DVD, create a DVD from the USB installer. If you know how to do this then ignore the rest, grab a dual-layer DVD and get cracking. If not, read on...First, mount your USB installer and then go to Disk Utility. Highlight the partition Install OS X Yosemite on the upper left pane then go to File > New > Disk Image from "Install OS X Yosemite". Select DVD/CD master as the image format then hit the Save button when you are ready. After a few moments you will have a disk image with the extension . cdr. This should be listed in Disk Utility on the lower left pane - highlight it and select Burn. You will need a dual-layer DVD for the burning operation. If you can boot from the original Apple installation discs you should be able to boot from your newly created DVD, and hopefully it will appear as a boot option. Be warned, booting from the Yosemite DVD will take a small eternity, the installation itself will take quite a bit longer. Still, it's better to get there slowly than not at all ;-)Alternatively, if you have a spare hard disk you could clone the Yosemite USB installer partition onto that using Disk Utility's Restore function. This should in theory be much quicker but I've not tried it out yet. I have had a successful boot and install from DVD on a MacBook (school's out for Easter so no access to a Mac Pro at the moment) so at least we know it's possible to create a working DVD installer.Small addition - when installing from DVD the progress bars will lead to you to believe it's actually going to take forever, if not slightly longer. However, these do tend to stick at certain points while the system's busy and the whole process should be done in just over an hour.

2. where do I go to get to word processor in mac pro?

Bdig85 gave you a good answer. As she says, Macs come with a basic word processor called TextEdit and you will find it in your Applications folder. TextEdit can even open and save in Microsoft Word format, so it's a bit better than the free WordPad application that comes on a typical Windows computer. Moving up the ladder in capabilities is some free software, starting with the least capable: OpenOffice - an old Windows suite that bombed in the market place. After it bombed, the maker decided to give it away for free. Sore losers. IBM's Lotus Symphony: A more recent Office-knock off, also free. worth checking into if you want something for free. Bean: A very nice Mac-centric free word processor. It's only a word processor, though, not a whole office suite. iWork: A suite of medium-capable programs from Apple. These have nice interfaces and are easy to use, but not fully featured. SkyDrive: A free, online version of Microsoft Office. Not as full featured as the complete suite you purchase, but more fully featured than the other free offerings. Comes with free on-line storage and file sharing. Fully compatible with Office for Windows. Microsoft Office: The full suite comes with fonts, templates, full compatibility with Office for Wiindows. Well worth the money if you find that SkyDrive or one of the other free offerings does not do the trick for you. Microsoft Office is a Mac application, not something ported from Windows like OpenOffice. AppleScript support and Automator actions are available.

3. Mac Pro upgrade options [closed]

For the Mac Pro 3,1:The upgrades sound reasonable, however here's a few comments:The extra CPU seems like it could be expensive for such an old part. Make sure the extra processing power is worth it to you.I dont understand why you would replace the existing memory (you write that you currently have 2 x 4GB and want to upgrade to 8 x 2GB). Why not just get an extra 2 x 4GB instead of replacing the memory that's already in the machine. The benefit of filling all slots is very very minor (source).Replacing a spinning hard drive with an SSD is the best thing you can do for pretty much any computer these days, so that's definitely a good ideaI havent been able to find definite information about if the GTX 570 is actually compatible with the system. But someone in this thread claims that:All nVidia GTX works perfect. No need special edition, all works in 10.8.2 I have the GTX 770 running in my Mac Pro 2008. In OSX and Windows (bootcamp)For the Mac Pro 5,1:The memory configuration is correct. You can not do it any better except by replacing your 2GB RAM modules with 8GB ones.Again, I can not find any definitive information in the video card, so make sure it's compatible before you purchase.
