Apple Watch to Get a 'brand-new' Display next Year

Apple has been rumoured before to bring microLED screens to its future device. But it looks like the company could bring this screen tech as soon as next year in one of its popular devices - Apple Watch. According to Economic Daily News, Apple is in advanced talks with Taiwanese display manufacturers to possibly debut it in 2020 Apple Watch, replacing the current display manufacturer - LG Display. If you aren't aware, microLED displays are more power-efficient and will consume less battery of the watch. They can also help Apple in making a slimmer device in future. Although details are scarce at the moment, previous rumours and reports have indicated that Apple will partner with Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for developing microLED panels for the Apple Watch.According to a previous report by Bloomberg, microLED display can even come to iPhones after a few years.Apple moved to OLED for its iPhones back in 2017 when it launched the iPhone X. At that time the company tapped on the shoulders of its 'frenemy' Samsung for display panels. For the newer iPhone XS, XS Max and XR models, the company reportedly had LG onboard as well. The use of microLEDs in iPhones means that users will be able to see content that is more vibrant than OLEDs and with deeper blacks. That's because microLEDs don't require backlight as the pixels in them emit their own light like OLED. However, the microLED panel's brightness doesn't tone down over time like in the case of OLEDs. The burn-in issues are also less.According to recent reports, the reason why Apple is not using microLED panels in iPhones is that OLED's cost is lesser with more yields. The manufacturers are yet to start mass making microLED screens. Apple is also rumoured to have it's own research and development facility for microLEDs.
