Common Bag of Dog Toys Questions

1. My dog is afraid of loud sounds!?

Noise sensitivity is not inherent in your dog, it has been learned.

Comforting a dog that acts noise sensitive is actually rewarding him for cowering.

Petting and coddling your dog is positive reinforcement, so whenever he acts like he is cowering to noise, ignore him.

Try to get him to play his favorite game or with his favorite toy during fireworks or a thunderstorm. Take him for a walk outside if it is not too bad of weather. He has to face his fear and you need to help him. If you can get him for a walk during a thunderstorm, give him treats along the way if he is walking confidently.

Start by making noise while he is doing something he likes, playing ball (or whatever), eating, or chewing on a rawhide. Start small and at somewhat of a distance. Bang a pan or pop a plastic bag in another room until the dog is desensitized to that particular noise. You can eventually get closer and louder, but take your old sweet time doing these exercises. This will take months for him to get over.

As long as you are consistent, and understanding, there is a possibility that you can get him over this.

Best of luck.

2. Birthday party idea- what kinds of things should I ask for? (Don't worry, it's dog related)?

WOW!!!! What a wonderful idea.

They need food, money, blankets, leads, chew toys, rawhides and time. You could call the shelter and ask them specifically what they need. May surprise you with the odd things they may be in desperate need of. What about the group of you go for a few hours to the shelter and assist them with cleaning cages, or whatever they need. Do this instead of a party at home- might just teach the other parents and the attendees a little about not being selfish!

Thank you in advance for doing this for the less fortunate of the dogs!!! Cannot say how awesome an idea this is!!! What a happy birthday you are going to have- hope you have many, many more!!!

3. Long plane flight with my dog?

Talk to your vet, most airlines require a health certificate to fly with a pet, so please find out what exactly your airline needs and then see the vet to get it, while there mention the anxiety issues and ask for something, keep in mind some airlines won't let you fly with a tranqed dog(at high altitudes some sedatives can have more effect than if they were on ground level, and the airline doesn't want to deal with that) so you might only have the option of trying to keep him calm personally

good luck, hope your flight goes well

Edit to add: Yes pets can go in the cabin, if they are small enough that the carrier is considered a carry-on, as long as you check your airline's size restrictions and follow all other rules and you should have no problem

4. What should i get my Doggy!!!!?

Our dog loves Greenies, soft toys, and tons of affection. She sleeps in her own bed, not in ours, so for special occasions we break out the sleeping bags and go 'camping' with her on the floor - she thinks it's fantastic. I'd only get outfits if she likes them (remember, it's her birthday) - ours likes her sweaters, as she's a short-hair and it gets cold in the winter.

I bet what she'd love most is attention, attention, praise, playing, attention, a nap, and then some attention and a nice snack. Btw, our dog is also blind, but it doesn't stop her from loving a party, especially if it's in her honor. Our dog also loves a car ride (as long as it's not to the vet) - she especially loves the gas station because the attendants give her dog treats.

I hope you and your little one have a fantastic birthday - you obviously adore her, and I'm sure spending her time with you is what she wants most :)

5. I don't believe my dog died of parvovirus, can anyone point me in the right direction?

First it takes 7-10 days to show.

She actually form what you say showed for a few days .You also probably stressed her body even more by taking her to the store and around others .

Chis sugar does go down quickly and also dehydrates quickly and with her bringing it back up she was dehydrating probably quickly and would have been better with sub-q or intervenes fluids.

there are test just for parvo

the only way you can be sure is by having necropsy but I believe it's to late.

Sounds like she was sick maybe a stomach something , low blood sugar, stress, Possibly poisoning the extra stress of being taken and exposed to who knows what well already sick at your shop. this all may have caused the low blood sugar which if not corrected can cause paralysis and death,.

Again the only way to know is a necropsy

Sorry for your loss but with little dogs like chis never let something like vomiting and diarrhea more than 12 hours if that long

6. how much does it cost to take care of a dog yearly?

There is no SET price. Prices for pet care vary from dog to dog.

Smaller dogs usually cost less to care for and feed then larger dogs, who cost more to feed.

Medical care and other things need to be taken into consideration as well and medical care is NOT cheap. A broken leg or a C-Section is $2,500 out of pocket right there.

So no, it's not hardly ridiculous or surprising if someone told me they spent more then $3,000 or more on their dogs in a year, it's common for food costs all together for a multiple dog home to cost more then $1,200

Some people aren't cheap so they don't pay $10 for large bag of your average Dollar Store crap dog food, and some people like things that will actually work or last a while so they pay a good sum of money for their dogs supplies and materials.

A large back of dog food for $10? Unheard of in my area, even for cheap dog food.

7. What would the total cost of dogs expensices be?

Puppies (6 months and under): $150 Small Dogs (Under 25 pounds): $100 Dogs (7 months and older): $75 Senior Dogs (7 years and older): $45 That's about the average cost of shelter dogs around my area. I don't think there are ever high adoption fee's, they're all nonprofit and any money they do get just gets used on the dogs again. @ Hollywood, do you not know the amount of money they spend DAILY on dogs? $300 is nothing compared to that. Plus 99.

9% of all shelters do spay/neuter. Vets now a day charge that much on that alone. --- You need to remember, buying a puppy can run $1,000. I would spend $600 on a shelter dog even if they didn't spay/neuter. Just because it's a shelter dog doesn't make it any less of a responsibility. I honestly think Rescues should raise prices, people see a bargain and jump right into it without thinking of all the work, why 70% of shelter dogs do get returned!

8. what kind of toys will older ferrets play with?

You could try making a maze out of a shoebox, with treats (fruit or vegetables is a good one if you're thinking of putting quite a lot of treats down) dotted around and at the end of the maze. You could use sturdy cardboard tubing to make different entrances/exits that go to different places in the cage (or wherever you intend to play with them).

Another idea is to use one of those dog toys with the hole cut out for treats - put the treats in and watch as your ferret rolls the ball around to get to the treats.

I've heard of some people using large hamster wheels to entertain their ferrets, I suppose it might work if you can find one big enough and encourage your ferret to get used to the motion of it.

A sandbox-type toy might be good for if your ferret enjoys digging, burying something for her to find may work.

Swimming is good for ferrets, maybe introducing her to the paddling pool?

9. What type of Dog is right for me?

First, I'll tell you the breeds to avoid. Hounds like Beagles and Dachshunds, due to their hunting heritage have a tendency to howl, which will be unpleasant to your neighbors. Terriers tend to be very noisy, because of all their energy. Other breeds to avoid are Toy poodles, Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and Yorkshire Terriers. I have a Toy Poodle myself, and he barks at every single thing that passes by.

OK, So I think that a Papillon fits your lifestyle. The name Papillon is french for butterfly and this breed got that name from their butterfly shaped ears. Papillons are spirited little dogs with energy to spare. They love to chase balls and run around the house, though they are happy to take a break to soak up a little love and attention whenever they can get it. They learn things quickly, and are often at the top of their class in obedience and agility. Papillons make excellent family dogs, in that they can keep up with kids who want to play, but know when it's time to relax for a belly rub and a nap. They make excellent companion animals for first time dog owners. Overall, they are energetic, bright, sunny little geniuses, that make great dogs..

Thank you for not calling a dog "it" :) I appreciate it!

10. toys for a 1.5 year old lhasapoo tough chewer??

Our dog loves to chew basically anything in sight. I do love the Kong toys, but they are rubber. However they are a soft rubber- maybe your dog would like those, heck if your dog is as wild as mine why not give it a try? Let's see... chew ropes are good too. I don't have any particular brand in mind right now, but if you can find one that looks durable enough try it. Also, there is something called a Wubba. It is for the makers of the Kong toy but it is covered in cloth material. So if it's just the feel of the rubber that your dog does not like, that might be good for him. Lastly, there is something for very super chewers... and I mean VERY. It's called a Tirebiter. And, as you may have guessed, it's made out of tires. Yes it's is rubber, but it's tough.

Good luck.

*edit- another thing that we do with our dog, is to just use rawhide chews- or any chew really- and use it as a toy. It lasts long, the dog can chew it, it can be played with, and you can buy bags of them. Pretty nice.
