Do therapists forget their clients after termination? Not this counselor.Every counselor or therapist approaches their work differently, from their own worldview and culture, and with different perspectives on what success in counseling might look like.
Some perceive success to be a series of achieved behavioral goals that culminate in symptom reduction and eventually termination. This makes sense if you are working from a deficit/problem-based model, like the medical model. I dont work this way except under unusual, specific circumstances, but counselors that I know who do tell me its difficult to remember every client, and that the important thing was the success of the clinical work, which they usually measure by symptom reduction and behavior change.
The client feels better, is hopefully also doing better, so on to the next. My own theoretical orientation and clinical approach is both relational and contextual, which means I believe that the quality, or essence, of the therapeutic alliance is the primary conduit for healing in counseling, and that a clients context (primary relationships, institutions, and wider culture) probably has a lot to do with how they make sense of the world and any suffering or distress theyre experiencing. From my perspective, then, the therapeutic relationship plus some combination of active contextual changes like boundary setting, communication and coping skill development, and activism, are usually a better bet for lasting change.
However, in order for this strategy to work, I have to be able to walk a mile in clients shoes, withhold judgment, and (as others have noted) bring my most open, warm, caring self to bear each and every time we meet. It is literally my job to authentically care about them with the most unconditional positive regard I can muster, and I strive to do this for everyone as best I can, as often as possible. So, the therapeutic relationship in my clinical practice is not one-sided.
Im no blank slate. When its time for me and a client to complete our work together, I feel them go, and depending on the circumstances of our completion, it may feel any number of ways to me, except nothing. Its always something.
Over time, I do sometimes forget names, especially last names, the details of how someone looked, or the specifics of what they may have said on this day or another (thank goodness for clinical documentation!). However, if I am able to make and sustain therapeutic contact with someone in any meaningful way, I will not forget my sense of them, of their suffering, resilience, and hopefully liberation

Why aren't the Guess Who brought up as one of the best rock groups of their time?
Because they werenu2019t. But they were one of the best Canadian Rock groupsu2026.The Guess Who were a fine band, which featured good songs mixed in with real good musicianship.
Burton Cummings had a unique voice and played multi-instruments. Randy Bachman, followed by Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw, then Dominic Troiano, all played beautiful melodic solos mixed in with some frantic tones and distortion.above: On The Midnight Special 1973 u201cUndunu201dI saw the Guess Who several times in my youth, and as an adult, was an engineer at a studio in LA that Burton came to and u2018attemptedu2019 to play on a session there.
Letu2019s just say, it didnu2019t go too well for him that night ehu2019! Haha. .
One of the first things I remember about The Guess Who as a kid was the name. If you didnu2019t know there were separate bands named The Who, and The Guess Who, you weren't hip! You werenu2019t with it.
I never saw the early lineups that eventually became The Guess Who. Amazingly it started way back in the early 60u2019s when Bachman and bassist Jim Kale were in a local Winnipeg band. Over the years it morphed into The Guess Who.
nI saw the band much later when they were promoting u2018American Womanu2019. They were great! So low-key, almost a casual, jamming approach to the stage.
They wore t-shirts, jeans, and the stage was littered with ashtrays, beer bottles, and hand towels! They played great, and really related to the audience well. u2018American Womanu2019 became the first song by a Canadian artist to top the Billboard Charts!
Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings played fantastic. Bachmanu2019s leads were a mixture of trad Jazz and Psychedelia. Cummings had the audience eating out of his hands, cracking jokes, talking, drinking on stage!
They were so relaxed! Unlike the other bands of that era. Sometime soon after that, Bachman converted to Mormonism.
It created a problem within the band, particularly with Cummings, and the guitarist left the group. He would form Bachman-Turner Overdrive with C.F.
Turner and brother Tim Bachman. The next time I saw The Guess Who, Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw presented a twin axe attack. They did a fine job, and the group was turning out Gold albums, mixed with Gold Singles.
They had a several Top 40 songs such as u2018Share The Landu2019 and u2018Hand Me Down Worldu2019. The last hit song they wrote was u2018Clap For The Wolfmanu2019 which was a Top 10 hit in 1974. They would disband in 1975.
Over the next few years, there were several attempts at reforming by Jim Kale, Burton Cummings, and Kurt Winter. They all would have varying degrees of success, but nothing like the heyday of The Guess Who, 1969 - 1974.Why aren't the guess who brought up as one of the best rock groups of their time?

Is it ever appropriate to have a friendship with your therapist after therapy has ended?
I have been to three therapists till now. Each time, I had to change because of my change in location.
In each time, I chose to keep the relationship as professional as possible. It is very common to have friendly feelings for your therapists. It is very common to develop a feeling of understanding, dependence and bonding towards your therapist.
But from the therapists point of view, you are just another patient, nothing special, even if your therapist tells you that you are the most cooperative patient they have ever had, the truth still stands that it is just their profession and you are a client. Now let us check the other side of this case. How do you think they will react if all their actual real life friends start to discuss their issues with them for some help?
Will they adore that friendship? Being a therapist is a very draining process where you have to constantly absorb your clients negative feelings. So, in their real personal life, they arent looking for friends who behave like their patients.
Your mental dependence on the therapist being the main reason behind you wanting to be his/her friend, that feelings will not be reciprocated. Your therapist doesnt think of you as his/her friend, probably even after the session ends, except for a few exceptional cases where the age gap is minimal and there are some other ways where you think you both can bond well. Even in those cases that can happen only with very young therapist at the very start of their career.
With maturity and experience of handling hundreds of patients who look for friendship in them, they do not feel any such emotion in the later stages of their career. So, in spite of feeling sad while leaving IIT Kharagpur because I would miss my therapist, I never allowed myself to even give a call to her expect for the transition I needed later to start with a new therapist. She was seeing me even when she left the counselling centre and I wasnt her patient on pen and paper any more.
But still, I am sure she would not have appreciated if I was looking for some bonding in her. So, if you approach for a friendship to your therapist, in some countries it isnt legal. In almost all countries, your proposal will be turned down and the rejection will be very polite but will be hard for you to handle.
In worst case, I have heard a psychologist sexually using a emotionally dependent patient. That is a massive shock to absorb. So, better, keep it as professional as possible, unless the approach comes from your therapist.
If so, evaluate the pros and cons and enjoy the friendship only if it is legal and he/she is not exploiting your massive dependence, trust on him or is not asking for some favour my blackmailing you with the secrets he/she already knows about you. Therapists, like any other human, can be evil as well (no personal experience in this regard).
