As far as my experience I believe it's worth a try. You will surely get the same experience of doing workshop at other place outside your campus, there you may have to pay some lump some amount for the workshop but college people may organise at a budget price with all those equipments you need. :)Being in campus workshop you will get to know many people of your college , various knowledgeable people , and they will ofcourse be as friendly and professional as they can be. If you are in the US I would recommend 40k or Warhammer Fantasy over LotR, simply because more people play these than LotR, and as such it is easier to find used models and folks to play. Go to your local gaming store and see what most people in your area play. That is what you should play. It's well and good having a great set of minis and rules, but if no one else is playing, it does not do you much good. As far as a personal opinion, I like Warhammer Fantasy due to what I perceive as a higher level of tactical difficulty. This same aspect of the game makes it more difficult to learn and play however. They are ALL expensive to play.
