A mattress topper-pad can revitalize an older mattress that has seen better days. It can also soften the firmness level of a mattress that is too hard for the sleeper's taste. The most popular types of mattress toppers on the market are memory foam, feather and fiber.
Which is the best type for you? To help you decide, my research team has gathered data from over 1,400 actual owners of mattress toppers. And from this data we have identified the distinct characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of each topper type.
This article will discuss two aspects of our research findings: comfort and durability / longevity. Comfort Memory foam, feather and fibers toppers all performed well on this important issue. For each type, over 90% of owners said that their topper improved the comfort of their mattress.
A significant percentage of owners also indicated that they sleep better and experience less pain, such as back pain, since sleeping on their topper. Memory foam, however, did best in regard to providing better sleep and reducing pain. Durability and Longevity All types performed respectably here.
Featherbeds, however, typically performed best. Overall, a topper usually has a life expectancy of at least three years. The data suggests that turning the topper regularly helps to extend the life of the product to avoid sleeping on the same part of it all the time.
It should also be pointed out that having a topper can extend the life of your mattress because your body comes in contact with the topper as opposed to the mattress itself.
