A hamster's teeth will grow and grow if not ground down. Your hamster is just trying to chew to keep his teeth from splitting into the roof of his mouth (yes, I have seen this, and it's horrible) You can buy flavoured wooden blocks from pet stores. The only reason I would discourage around-the-house-items like toilet paper rolls is because it is not made to be eaten. The ones in the pet store are safe for consumption.
