I would like to give an overly-enthusiastic response to Star Wars toys, but kids are frequently moving from one fad to the next... Star Wars toys do seem like a more lasting gift. Barbie, Hot Wheels, Nerf... I would think those toys may not have the staying power of the advertising power which I would expect from the Star Wars franchise... which is a bit sad, as those other (possibly more age-appropriate) brands are more likely to promote imagination more concerned with immediate truths... if you know that the kids have a good attention span, I probably would suggest Barbie, Hot Wheels, or Nerf type toys. Star Wars is more guaranteed to be a socially acceptable interest later on in life, as the kids get older, while the time-span for encouraging some of the imaginative powers of children with those other toys is probably more limited. Those toys can sort of become defiant points of pride against aging and excluding, as one gets older (if they survive the kids' play!)... I've saved as many of those sorts of toys as I could, in remembrance of the fact that it does not take much to make a good time. ... I had a Star Wars passion passed onto me as well, from my father... it's not a bad idea, anyways.
