In my experience, its more of a pommy immigrant thing than Australian. Im a 5th generation Australian and an old guy, and rarely have I ever heard anyone using the term. In my observation, the term mate is mainly used in a belligerent confrontation between drunks.

Australian here, living in Australia all my life. I could probably count on one hand (okay, maybe two) the number of times Ive genuinely said Gday mate without it being said as a joke or overt OTT joke greeting. On the other hand, Id probably say a warm Gday several times a week.
If you said it without a genuine Aussie or Kiwi accent, Id probably read that as someone trying too hard. Just say Hi or Hello. We do that, too
