it is possible to train them not to destroy their toys ... i had a bichon whose favourite toy was a stuffed whale ... whenever he would start chewing on it in more of an eating way rather than playing i would take it away . .. i did this consistently and i will admit it took almost six months but he finally got it and then changed to sucking on it which was gross but acceptable ... you can also try toys made for dogs with really strong jaws, i see tons in the pet stores i frequent
