I am the only nurse in the office, the rest are MAs. The receptionist said u2018nurseu2019 is a generic term. How do I politely correct her on this?

Back when I started in practice 28 years ago, we had LPNs and RNs who did the job in our office that MAs do now. A well trained MA could also do the front office tasks that we have otherwise trained people do. At that time, it was appropriate to call the woman who put patients in the room a nurse, because she was in fact a nurse.

But, unfortunately, like so many things, over time we have cheapened the outpatient practice of medicine. I have an MA. I tell my patients that she is an MA.

The front office staff may not know the difference in training, but I do. I also point out that the PA or NP is not a physician, because theyre not. I have respect for everybodys training and expertise, but everybody is not the same.
