What Three Programming Paradigms Should I Learn?

When I think programming paradigms, three big ones jump out at me. Iu2019d say that these three should be learned, not necessarily because they are the most interesting or u201ccoolu201d, but because theyu2019re so widespread. Iu2019m also biased as this is the path I took when learning programming (although Iu2019m still learning more about different paradigms all the time).

I started out learning programming in a procedural paradigm. I feel this is the most common paradigm to learn first as itu2019s relatively simple, focusing on the basic components of programming (e.g.

if statements, for loops, etc.) while still introducing functions. You can do this in most popular languages, even object oriented ones, and just ignore the u201cobjectu201d part.

There are procedural languages that are used mainly for teaching, like Turing, but a more popular language such as Python is probably just as good.nnBetween the next two I mention, object oriented and functional, I donu2019t think there is a clear choice of what to learn next. I learned object oriented next, and I think this is the most common, but thereu2019s really nothing stopping you from moving straight to functional.

Object oriented is arguably the most popular, or at least well known, programming paradigm. It divides related code into u201cobjectsu201d, making code organization and refactoring easier. This can be particularly useful when working in a team.

Languages like Java, Python, or C have OOP baked in making it easier to learn OOP.Functional programming is the last paradigm Iu2019ll mention. This paradigm is very old but has recently been gaining popularity.

It can be a bit hard to get used to coming from a procedural background but the resulting code is often shorter and clearer than the equivalent OO code. I learned by taking the Functional Programming Principles in Scala course on Coursera (and would recommend it!).

Itu2019s taught by the author of Scala and it gives insight on the components that make up functional programming. Why pick only three though? Each programming paradigm has strengths and weaknesses and will teach you concepts that youu2019ll be able to apply even when programming with a different paradigm.

I recently worked with functional programming a lot and found that I pulled out ideas from it while writing OO code. Iu2019m also taking a course on software design in OOP now which Iu2019m sure will impact my functional code. One last thing to add: paradigms are not mutually exclusive and often build on each other.

For example, procedural code is often imperative and object oriented code still uses procedural ideas.(I know in the details you mentioned you already know OOP so likely u201cfunctionalu201d is the only interesting part of this answer for you. I wanted to write an answer to the full question, though, and for other people who may be interested in getting into programming.

What has been the rudest thing a fellow passenger has done on board a plane?

I have already answered this question here: Batul Netterwala's answer to What is the best or most diplomatic way to say "no" if someone asks you to swap seats with them on an airplane? But well, here it is again : My fiancu00e9 and I were travelling to Chennai and we had a window and middle seat.

Before boarding we had decided I would get the window seat (I'm dominating like that :P). But when we reached our assigned row there was a woman in the aisle seat. Must have been in her early 50s.

Sensing that she wouldn't be comfortable sitting next to a guy, he and I decided to switch seats (much to my chagrin). As we are about to take off, I see that the lady in the aisle has a co-traveller who is across the aisle in a row ahead of us. (This is a small plane, so it was just 2 sets of 3 seats on each side of the aisle.

) Both of them keep asking the flight attendant something, to which she keeps telling them "I'll get back to you". (Later on I realized they were asking her for a window seat for each one of them.)After the flight takes off & the seat belt sign goes off, I decide to start reading my book, while my fiance decides to listen to some music.

Lady in the aisle is still bugging the attendant, even asking her if she could sit in the empty exit row by the wing, but quickly backs off when she's told she will need to pay extra for the extra legroom. It was an afternoon flight and my fiance starts dozing off, resting his head on the window, with the shutter closed to shut the light out. I put my headphones in and continue reading.

Suddenly lady in the aisle pokes my arm hard and says (quite rudely may I add) "why did he shut the shutters? I can't see out! if you guys aren't going to look out of the window, why don't you ask him to exchange seats with me?

"Now I was pissed off. She was extremely rude. She could see that my fiance was sleeping with his head on the window.

We actually checked in like 2 hours before our flight was scheduled to take off (the requirement of domestic flights is only 45 minutes) because I wanted a window seat (which I couldn't even sit on because of her!)I told her "I'm sorry, but he's sleeping"& she persists and goes "Well at least open the shutter so that I can look out" Hearing her voice her co-traveller looks back and they start conversing in a language I don't understand. Then lady in the aisle switches to hindi and goes on to talk loudly about how "today's generation is mannerless & does not respect elders" & "what sort of an upbringing had I got for refusing her so bluntly" & how we were "so selfish & wouldn't share the 'privilage' with her".

I was so mad. We were in the clouds at that point (as visible in the window across the aisle), so looking out didn't even matter. The commotion woke my fiancu00e9 up and being the gentleman that he is, he opened the shutter for her (I refused to let him give her my window seat!

I would have gladly given her the seat had she been a bit more polite!)After the plane had taxied to a stop, she refused to move out from her seat and let us collect our bags from the overhead compartment because she couldn't "deal with crowds" & if we wanted to sit in the interior seats we should "not be in a hurry to get off". (This was when the rows up till us were almost empty and the only seats occupied were by senior citizens and a mother with a tiny infant).

I was astounded by her vindictiveness, but we let her behavior pass and waited until the plane was 90% empty before she moved out and we could leave

What are Albanian women like?

This is an interesting question because the answer turns on so many things such as:The generation to which they belong - for example, Albanian women born pre-1980u2019s ish are very different to those born after. They tend to be fiercely loyal to their husbands and families.

They rarely report abuse by their spouses or demand divorce. A lot of them have tolerated extreme conditions, including living without their partners for years looking after their inlaws, children and working without much infidelity or complaint, let alone divorce. On the other hand, the younger women are more westernised in the sense that they tolerate a lot less shit like this.

The region they live in - for example, the Northern highlands regions are very conservative and highly restrictive. Similarly for some southern highland regions. However, Tirana and a lot of the Coastal cities are very different and women are largely freer - that said, they are still extremely loyal to family.

But this is a fairly common trait amongst Albanians generally not just women (although men tend to be cheaters at a much higher degree than women, maybe 20 or 30 times more). Aside from these regional and generational variances, appearance tends to be a spectrum as well. We certainly have some extremely beautiful women but it wouldn't be fair to say all or even most are that way.

As with all peoples, there is variety. They also vary in appearance, we have blondes and red heads in the north and some olive skin brunettes in the south and everything in between. In terms of temperament, most Albanian women expect a man to lounge around relaxing, watching football and chilling as long as he has a job and financially supports his family - they will do all the house work EVEN IF THEY WORK TOO!

They donu2019t even stress the men about thisu2026 so you can watch your football and have a drink with your feet up in peace every time. I thought this was the norm until I started dating non-Albanian women and my socks started piling up and the house wasn't self cleaning. I realised this only after years of thinking it was standard.

Itu2019s unbelievable. Another thing about Albanian women is they are insanely devoted to their children but especially their sons. If an Albanian mother losses a son, sheu2019s usually a write-off and you may as well bury her as well (and actually if you go to an Albanian funeral where a young man has died, you will often hear the lamentations of the mother are always soul-piercing cries and praying to god to take her as well, sometimes they pull out their hair and other really awful stuff - actually avoid Albanian funerals if you can).

A good proportion stop leaving their homes and will wear black for the rest of their lives and will never listen to music again or do anything we would consider joyful. I often compare them to zombies from the films because thatu2019s how they seem to become. You donu2019t see this so much with losing daughters though, which is weird.

Finally, purely from my limited observations within my extended family and community, I would say most Albanian women struggle with losing some baby fat u2026 and tend to get progressively larger with age.
