A class is better than books because I dont think you would have an easy time self-teaching yourself mandarin, because they material just gets a lot harder, and you need guidance to tell you if youre writing correctly, pronouncing things correctly, etc. I would say online learning is okay, but only if you have a teacher coaching you, and not like courses online that you would have to teach yourself
