If championships are all you care about, baseball probably isn't the sport for you. However, let the lesser sports go first. Reviewing league champions over the past, oh, 30 years, we find these teams have failed to claim even one, and therefore must needs be contracted (please note this is NOT comprehensive, just a sampling of non-champion teams): NFL: Seattle, San Diego, NY Jets, Tennessee, Houston, New Orleans, Philadelphia.

NBA: Orlando, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York, Indiana, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Golden State, LA Clippers. NHL: Boston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Toronto, Vancouver. And there's others.

Why DO these leagues retain such deadwood? Well, the 2008 MLB season is underway, we cannot expect contraction now, it would muck up the season schedule. But the NBA and NHL are eventually going to finish their postseasons, and the NFL is doing nothing right now, so get in touch with those commissioners -- Stern, Bettman, and Goodell, respectively -- and tell them of your concerns.

We all need to cut back in these dark economic times, and they should be leading the way!

Go out. Take a walk. Observe as much as you can about everything around you.

Does your local library or a local bookstore ever hold poetry slams? You don't need to be a poet at all to get a lot out of an event like this. Call the library or store and ask, then go on the appropriate date, if one is given to you, and just listen.

Go to a pet store and look at absolutely everything there and see how it makes you feel. You can do the same with all kinds of stores, including sports, fashion, electronics. this is all material you can use later for writing in/beyond a journal.

You're exploring backgrounds, the way movie people choose a place for a 'location shoot'. Don't watch TV or movies. Do things in real time, out of your regular habits.

Sit in an empty church or synagogue or meeting hall (if these places aren't all locked up). Go to the park and just watch how the kids and their folks interact, or how they may not interact. The only way to have 'topics' to write about is by going out there and living them.

AAAA My snake bit me!

I guess I have been lucky, the only snake who ever bit me was a garter snake we had! And she bit me every chance she got for about a month straight!

I have had Red Tailed Boas, Kingsnakes, Ball Pythons, and lots of other snakes, and I was very careful to follow one rule that a snake owner gave to me when I bought my very first snake. Never handle their food with your bare hands. If the snake associates the smell of food with your hands, well, bingo, who can blame him for thinking its feeding time.

I have had people tell me that this is a myth, but I think that the fact that I never got bit speaks for itself! I also never threw a mouse or whatever into my snakes cages, I would normally take the snake out first and slip the food in while I was holding him, and when he was put back in he never had a clue where the food came from. If you just lift the lid of the tank and toss his food in, the lifting of the lid will trigger the striking response, eventually.

Also, I would handle that guy ALOT, Balls are usually extremely docile. My Red Tails were the ones I worried about the most, and I just let them spend the day around my neck while I worked around the house(until they got too big, of course) and even if I was just watching Tv, they were right there with me, most of the time they would crawl inside my sleeve or behind my neck and sleep. My point is that they were so used to my smell, I was like part of the scenery after awhile.

They would no sooner bite me than they would their water bowls. And when I had to sell my biggest female Red Tail, she bit her new owner several times and he was upset by it. I told him the no- hands-on-the-food rule and he later told me he didnt have anymore problems.
