Three most common reasons: * Your air filter is blocked solid, causing your evaporator to freeze up * Your condenser (located outside) needs to be cleaned * The safety shutoff outside is in the off position Clean or replace the air filter (some kinds allow cleaning instead of replacement). Clean the condenser -- your manual should tell you how. Check the safety shut-off. Make sure you've done the first two steps, then reset the safety switch. If it trips again, call an HVAC company. These steps handle what are by far the most common problems. However, you could have burned out the motor in the fan as well.

how do I turn on my central air conditioner?
Check the thermostat. Does it have a mode switch which selects "heat" and "cool" (or "a/c")? Is there another thermostat somewhere? Are the circuit breakers turned on? Is there an outside cutoff switch?
Is it legal to place the outlet drain for a central air conditioner condenser inside a household?
Not sure why it happens but, it seems that drains from AC units (and melting ice) causes bacteria to form faster than regular water. I would redirect it to the outside

My central air conditioner turns on and initially blows out cool air, but then stops. Why?
Sounds like the evaporator coil is freezing up. It will run cool for a while then ice blocks the air flow and it no longer cools. This can be caused by either the filter is clogged and needs replaced or the unit is low on freon. I would check the air filter first and purchase at a hardware store or wally world.
Is my central air conditioner compressor bad or could it be the capacitor?
ok, in case you will pay attention the contactor humming, the 24v coil in all possibility pulled the contactor closed. Open up the get admission to panel on the condenser unit. Be very very VERY careful at this element as there will be sufficient uncovered voltage to kill you. confident I suggested kill. in case you wo not be able to try this, end, call a specialist. look on the tin can looking element. that's the DRC (twin run capacitor) in spite of if that's in any respect swollen or leaking, its undesirable. -it would desire to get replaced. What you easily prefer is a VOM (volt-ohm meter) to take amp draw on the compressor, confirm the place you have voltage and the place you do no longer, and to take capacitace on the DRC. .... If the DRC tests out ok, then even although the contactor is humming, thats no assure its stable. If the contactor is not pulled in,(the contactor is the great H looking element). seek for the middle post. you ought to use your finger to push it in. If the fan & compressor start up and run yet end once you permit off, there is the subject. this ought to get you going. If it does not digital mail me immediately and that i will communicate you thru further troubleshooting in case you reside everywhere interior 75 miles of Sherman Tx I even have aspects in inventory on the truck.i will get this working for you interior half-hour.
How much should it cost to replace a central air conditioner compressor or should I just replace the a/c?
This site recommends six-seven steps you can do to check on your system, and, yes, checking the refrigerant level is one of them. The site also gives access to online shopping places where you can check the prices of new air conditioners (central, window, etc.) and online prices for the parts, before you call in help.
my central air conditioner started leaking water from a plastic hose outside the house. whats up with that?
The water you see coming out of that hose is just that. The coils will have a thin layer of ice build up on them when the unit runs a long time and runs harder because of hotter weather. The unit will shut off and the icy layer will melt and run out the drain that is attatched to the tray that the coils sit in. It is made this way to keep the moisture from getting in the electrical parts of the unit. One thing to check is the air filter on the unit. It probably needs changing or cleaning if it is one that can be cleaned.
Sears wants about $7000 to replace a central air conditioner in Connecticut?
Marko is correct. If you charge the job to your Sears account, Sears added 20% to the Contractors price for the privelege to charge the cost to your Sears account. Thi sway you are not only paying a higher price, but also paying about 29% per year on the oustanding balance of your Sears account. Read the following: ============================================== Selecting contractors: 1/ Look up local contractors first. work out from the closest to your location. If someone you trust has had work done similar to yours, ask them about the contractor they used. If they were completely satisfied with their contractor(s), ask for their telephone number. 2/ Select at least 5 your are interested 3/ Do a google/yahoo search on each of the contractors you are interested in; look for praises (check who is writing the praises to see if they have any connection to the contractor <scam artists and coffident persons often work in groups> google/yahoo search the people giving the praise or references) 4/ When you are satisfied with at least 3 contractors per job, have them give you written estimates with details of work to be done, terms, guarantee(s), cost of extras (how much do they charge if they find something not covered by the contract), paymant schedules if necessary and whatever else you can think of to protect yourself. 5/ If the contractor tries to pressure you into signing the contract immediately with a high deposit (more than 15% - deposits over 10% normally are not paid untill material is delivered and left at your site) reject that contractor. Be careful, high pressure can be someone who sounds very convincing, but has many reasons why you should sign on the dotted line NOW. 6/ It is always good to have another adult with you when a contractor inspects the work to be done. 7/ If you do not get at least 3 written estimates signed by the contractor - not you (do not sign yet) , go back to 1. repeat until you get written estimates signed by the contractor - not you (do not sign yet). Read the estimates over with some who has some knowledge of the work that has to be done. This may take longer than you thought; do not rush into it. Research, resaerch research, helps. When you are ready choose by being informed. Good Luck
central air conditioner does not cool or heat, but air blow and motor works?
* It could be a few things. 1 If your filter is dirty in your unit where the blower is, the this could cause warm air to blow through your vents due to the fact that there is not enough air blowing across your coils to be cooled down. When was the last time you had your filters changed? ****(you can turn off the power to the unit downstairs and then check the filter yourself. If your not sure where the power is, do not touch it.) 2 And yes, like everyone is saying, you may possibly have a leak in your system. No refrigerant = no cool. ****(you need a technician for this) 3 You could simply have a loose wire going to your compressor contactor or any other component that controls your outside unit ****(you need a technician for this. Although, you could turn your thermostat to cool, then go outside to see if your unit starts, if it does not start, you may have a problem with a component or a leak.)
It is colder outside than inside the house: is it ok to have the central air conditioner on AND open windows?
You answered your own question... this is a bad idea due to humidity
will a central air conditioner frost up if it is low on freon??
I've also heard it will freeze up if it's running quite a bit and if it's really hot out - such as it's been lately
I'm having a problem with my central air conditioner?
Sounds like you might need your unit recharged, you might want to call a heating and cooling co. to come out and take a pressure test on your system
can a central air conditioner that is oversized for the house freeze up?
The controls should keep it from freezing but you are likely to have a lot of cycling of the unit
Can I reverse a blower on a central air conditioner to clean out the evaporator coils?
Do not even think about it. Call a qualifed tech to take care of cleaning the coil
central air conditioner quit working, what could it be?
automatic shut off from an elec overload or from a dirty dirty dirty filter
so,my central air conditioner pipes are frozen. I have the fan on the system to help thaw.?
Here's my wild guess since I am not there. It may have been "about damn time" to change them. It could be given the weather in the east here in the US that the humidity is really high, and the compressor is condensing the moisture into ice as a result. Or, you got another problem and should call the repairman. Now, if it's the easy one, then just let it thaw completely while it is shut off, and then turn it on but not as high as it was until you see how it behaves
what causes a rotten egg smell coming from a central air conditioner?
Taco Bell the night before
my 25 year old electric central air conditioner is blowing only fan temp air. The blower works, and?
Most likely problem. Your unit has a slow leak and the freon level is too low for effective cooling. You need to call a professional to recharge the a/c. Of course, you may not be able to because I think the laws have changed and they only allow the new type of freon. If your local guy has some of the old stuff around, they will still charge your a/c up. That's the most likely problem. Second on the list is a bad compressor and/or bad relay/fuse leading to the compressor
How long can the condensation hose be on a central air conditioner?
you can go as far as you want as long it is always pitched 1/4" of an inch for each foot of fravel
If the central air conditioner will be on full time, does it matter the temperature that it is set on?
Having fiberglass insulation blown into the attic at an R-30 or R-38 insulation level is quite inexpensive, and will save money for heating and cooling year round. I think I spent about $500 having the attic of my old 1154 square foot ranch blown about 10 years ago, and the energy costs dropped about 30% while interior comfort was much greater. BTW, the compressor output is constant, but the rate of thermal exchange will vary depending on the temperature of the exchange medium. Running the air conditioner at night when the outside air is cooler will increase efficiency, while turning it on at the hottest part of the day will have the least efficiency. Set the thermostat at a reasonable temperature (like 76-78F). Turning it down to 70 or even 50 will not make it any cooler any quicker. When the weather is a little more pleasant, open up the windows at night and close them during the day to decrease cooling demand
