Many people buy their bed and mattress as a single unit and, in the case of the divan bed, this results in a matching set. There is however another alternative and that is to buy the bed and mattress separately. So do you want to be one of those people who chooses a neutral mediocre bedroom furniture set-up, or do you want to take the design and style of your bedroom into your own hands?
If so you can go for a feature bed that stands out and becomes the focal point of the bedroom. Why should you buy the bed and mattress independently? The answer is very simple and it falls into two parts.
The first is style and the second is flexibility to change your mattress at any time. The big problem with divan sets is that the mattress will often start to fail long before the supporting frame and, because they are a set, when one is past its sell-by-date, the other component also has to be scrapped. In many cases this means disposing of a perfectly acceptable divan simply because the matching mattress has outlasted its lifespan.
What is the alternative? With a separate stand-alone bed frame you buy the frame and then select, from all of the available mattresses, the exact one that you want. You are not tied down to a limited selection, or to the products of a single manufacturer.
This means that you can buy a stylish frame and then get mattress made from memory foam, springs, latex foam or any other material. In other words you have total control over what you sleep on and on how it looks. The other big positive about buying the bed frame as a separate unit is the choice that becomes open to you in terms of style and design.
Bed frames come manufactured from many different woods as well as cast iron and other metals. You can have a simple tubular metal framework, or you can go for an elaborate and intricately detailed hardwood timber four-poster with a canopy and curtains. You can select a traditional design, or go for a more contemporary or even hi-tec creation that focuses on minimalism or modern art.
Back down to earth a little bit more, and normal retailer bed frames do come in a near unlimited supply of styles and colours. The main features are often the headboards and foot boards and both can incorporate lattice designs (cast iron) or carvings and mouldings (timber). Colours too are not limited to the fabrics of a divan.
With iron and timber there are many different stains, varnishes and paints that allow colours and hues to be selected to match any bedroom's dcor. If you need more persuading, take a look at what is on offer and also compare the prices of buying the two items separately with buying them as a single unit. There is frequently very little difference.
